170 Books: Well... almost.

It is getting really hard to read with Emma! She turned 6 months old this week, and all she wants to do is grab things and put them into her mouth. And she is surprisingly strong! So sitting her on my lap and reading an entire book with her is not as easy as it used to be.

Today I read her a book while she played with my cell phone. My husband told me that he thought the positive effects of reading to her were being cancelled out by the negative effects of her staring at a cell phone screen. Haha! I’ll have to think of some other creative ways to read with her next week.

P.S. I only have 9 books this week because I accidentally checked out two copies of Happy Birthday, Moon! I’ll have to read 11 books next week. Hey, it’s hard to keep track of all of those books! It you don’t believe me, check out the picture I took today of all the books I need to return to the library tomorrow:

In other news, if the library has a limit on the number of books you can check out, it’s higher than 60!

Our Weekly Favorite:
Title: Moonbear’s Dream
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
Summary:
When best friends Bear and Little Bird spot a kangaroo bouncing across Bear's lawn, they can't believe their eyes. It must be a dream! Bear and Little Bird know that dreams are special, so they decide to have some fun before they have to wake up."

Why I Loved it:
  • What an adorable tale! Frank Asch always surprised me by including some little twist in his plot that I don't see coming. This one was great.
  • I love the happy ending.

Other Books We Read This Week:

Title: Moonbear’s Pet
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
I found this classic tale of a pet tadpole-turned-frog a bit boring.

Title: Baby Duck's New Friend
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
Frank Asch has a way of adding little twists and nuances to his stories that are novel and ward off predictability. I love it!

Title: Monsieur Saguette and his Baguette
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
This book was a little goofy for me.

Title: Like a Windy Day
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
The writing in this book was a bit abstract- more like a poem than a story. Not my cup of tea.

Title: Insects from Outer Space
Authors: Vladimir Vagin and Frank Asch
Illustrator: Vladimir Vagin
This book was really well done. The story was interesting, the ending was hilarious, and the pictures were incredible.

Title: Happy Birthday, Moon
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
This story was ok, with some cute moments, but. . . your echo can't repeat whole sentences back to you, and I couldn't get past that!

Title: Happy Birthday, Big Bad Wolf
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
I usually don't love books that are retakes on classic characters, but this one was very well done!

Title: Rattlesnake Dance
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky
I didn't understand this book. I think I need someone to explain the background to me, and I might like it better.

160 Books: This week, we're loving Tedd Arnold!

Our Weekly Favorite:

Title: Huggly Takes a Bath
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold

Summary:

"Huggly wants to do the things that human children do. But it's never as easy as he thinks! In this book, Huggly goes exploring in search of snacks. Ah! The bathroom looks like a good place to try! Everything in there is so interesting- especially the tub, where Huggly has lots of bubbly fun! "

Why I Loved it:
  • This book is hilarious! I was laughing out loud as I read it.
  • I love that the "monster under the bed" is named Huggly.
  • Apparently, there is a whole Huggly series- I can't wait to read more!

·      Other Books We Read This Week:

Title: Green Wilma, Frog in Space
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
This book was another favorite for the week. So cute and funny!

Title: No jumping on the Bed!
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
Another winner! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was that it was a bit rhyme-y for me. (The characters' names all rhymed.) The storyline was good, though, and I loved the ending!

Title: Dirty Gert
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
The idea of a girl turning into a plant is a bit disturbing, but the rhymes were non-typical and fantastic.

Title: Roar of a Snore
Author/Illustrator: Marsha Diane Arnold
Predictable storyline- nothing too special.

Title: Meow!
Author/Illustrator: Katya Arnold
Pretty typical animal-sound book. I didn't find it particularly interesting.

Title: Coyote Raid in Cactus Canyon
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky
I thought this was going to be a tragic tale of an innocent animal getting eating by a predator. That would have been bad, but the dull storyline when nothing really happened was only slightly better.

Title: Babies in the Bayou
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky
This book was written in the style of a non-rhyming poem. Not my favorite.

Title: The Twin Princes
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
I thought this story was pretty amusing, but the main riddle that the story was based on wasn't really that sound.

Title: A Pet for Fly Guy
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
I thought this story was pretty silly, but my baby LOVED all of the buzzing Z words- she couldn't stop laughing! So I gave it 2 stars instead of 1.
