160 Books: This week, we're loving Tedd Arnold!

Our Weekly Favorite:

Title: Huggly Takes a Bath
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold

Summary:

"Huggly wants to do the things that human children do. But it's never as easy as he thinks! In this book, Huggly goes exploring in search of snacks. Ah! The bathroom looks like a good place to try! Everything in there is so interesting- especially the tub, where Huggly has lots of bubbly fun! "

Why I Loved it:
  • This book is hilarious! I was laughing out loud as I read it.
  • I love that the "monster under the bed" is named Huggly.
  • Apparently, there is a whole Huggly series- I can't wait to read more!

·      Other Books We Read This Week:

Title: Green Wilma, Frog in Space
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
This book was another favorite for the week. So cute and funny!

Title: No jumping on the Bed!
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
Another winner! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was that it was a bit rhyme-y for me. (The characters' names all rhymed.) The storyline was good, though, and I loved the ending!

Title: Dirty Gert
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
The idea of a girl turning into a plant is a bit disturbing, but the rhymes were non-typical and fantastic.

Title: Roar of a Snore
Author/Illustrator: Marsha Diane Arnold
Predictable storyline- nothing too special.

Title: Meow!
Author/Illustrator: Katya Arnold
Pretty typical animal-sound book. I didn't find it particularly interesting.

Title: Coyote Raid in Cactus Canyon
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky
I thought this was going to be a tragic tale of an innocent animal getting eating by a predator. That would have been bad, but the dull storyline when nothing really happened was only slightly better.

Title: Babies in the Bayou
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky
This book was written in the style of a non-rhyming poem. Not my favorite.

Title: The Twin Princes
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
I thought this story was pretty amusing, but the main riddle that the story was based on wasn't really that sound.

Title: A Pet for Fly Guy
Author/Illustrator: Tedd Arnold
I thought this story was pretty silly, but my baby LOVED all of the buzzing Z words- she couldn't stop laughing! So I gave it 2 stars instead of 1.

150 Books: Still Very Much in the "A"s!

Our Weekly Favorite:

Title: Little Burro
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky

Summary:

“Little Burro’s canyon has everything she needs—it’s breezy and cool on a hot day, and warm and cozy at night. One day, her band of burros decides to travel to the lake. She does not want to go, but finally follows when her mother calls out to her. When they arrive, Little Burro is surprised to find that the lake is just as nice as her canyon—and even more fun!”

Why I Loved it:
  • This story was simple and sweet.
  • Donkeys are my favorite animals. I think a burro is kind of like a donkey . . . ? At least in my head it is.
  • (As always) I really enjoyed the author’s note. It told how the author witnessed a baby burro playing in the water one day, and decided to write the possible story behind the moment.

Other Books We Read This Week:

Title: Dolphins on the Sand
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky
A rescue story with great illustrations.

Title: I See Animals Hiding
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky
This book seemed very old. I did like the idea, and I think kids would have fun searching for the animals on each page.

Title: Goodbye House
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
I didn't really get this book.

Title: A Manatee Morning
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky
This book was ok, but not nearly as good at Jim Arnosky's other manatee book.

Title: Slow down for Manatees
Author/Illustrator: Jim Arnosky
I thought this book was great! I really liked how they didn't portray boaters as evil, but showed that sometimes manatees really are injured completely by accident.

Title: Rita and Whatsit
Author/Illustrator: Jean-Phillippe Arrou-Vignod
This book was a little strange, but overall, pretty good.

Title: Baby Bird’s First Nest
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
This story was sweet, but not earth-shattering.

Title: The Daily Comet: A Boy Saves Earth From Giant Octopus!
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
I was really looking forward to this book, but found the plot to be disappointingly weak.

Title: Good Night, Baby Bear
Author/Illustrator: Frank Asch
All of the things a mother bear has to go through to get her cub to go to sleep. Very sweet! This would be a good bedtime story.
