Week 10: Turns out, we're not big Allan Ahlberg fans

Our Weekly Progress
We had a snow day this week, which led to a lot of good reading time. But... we weren't big fans of most of the books we read, particularly those by Allan Ahlberg. Oh well! Now we can tell you what to avoid, haha!

Our Weekly Favorite:
Title: Tall
Author & Illustrator: Jez Alborough
Rating: 4 stars

Summary:
"When you're a tiny chimp like Bobo, it seems that everyone else is bigger than you. Luckily, all his pals, from the lion cub to the elephant to the towering giraffe, let Bobo climb on their shoulders or even their heads to give him a taste of being tall. But what if the eager little guy clambers too high? With endearingly espressive illustrations, Jez Alborough turns a moment of high anxiety into a Mommy-and-Bobo reunion in another irresistible tale of very few words- and very big heart."

Why I Loved it:
  • Not wordy at all- Emma might be reading this one on her own soon! ;)
  • This book is a great way to expose kids to relativity- tall means different things depending on what you're comparing.

Other Books We Read This Week:
Title: The Snail House
Author: Allan Ahlberg
Illustrator: Gillian Tyler
Rating: 1 star
This book went on for far too long!

Title: The Pencil
Author: Allan Ahlberg
Illustrator: Bruce Ingman
Rating: 1 star
This book had some cute elements, but overall, it was rambling and ridiculous.

Title: Previously
Author: Allan Ahlberg
Illustrator: Bruce Ingman
Rating: 1 star
I found this book to be a bit boring.

Title: Monkey Do!
Author: Allan Ahlberg
Illustrator: Andre Amstrutz
Rating: 2 stars
One of Allan Ahlberg's better efforts (thus, the 2 star rating)

Title: The Shopping Expedition
Author: Allan Ahlberg
Illustrator: Andre Amstutz
Rating: 2 stars
Like most of Allan Ahlberg's books, I finished reading and thought, "Was there a point to this book?"
Title: A Bit More Bert
Author: Allan Ahlberg
Illustrator: Raymond Briggs
Rating: 1 star
This was the worst book we've read so far.  It was completely void of meaning.  Much too silly for me- although I'll be nice and say that maybe a kid would think it was funny.

Title: Louella Mae She's Run Away!
Author: Karen Beaumont Alarcon
Illustrator: Rosanne Litzinger
Rating: 2 stars
I liked the way that the book had rhyming stanzas with the last word on the next page so that kids could guess them.. but that was all I liked.

Title: Don't Call Me Pruneface!
Author: Janet Reed Ahearn
Illustrator: Drazen Kozjan
Rating: 3 stars
Good discussion starter for how to act when someone is unreasonably mean to you.

Title: Super Duck
Author & Illustrator: Jez Alborough
Rating: 1 star
Another book that didn't really seem to have a point.
